Finding treasure in Nomad Drive is a three-tool loop: a metal detector to locate a spot, a shovel to dig, and a key if the box is locked. Achievements X Marks the Spot, Lock and Key, and Locksmith are the studio’s names for that loop.
The crowbar is a different tool. Breaking and Entering is prying a door. I am not telling you to crowbar a chest.
Detector, shovel, key
A June 2026 thread says the detector beeps faster as you close in. The same players drop the detector on the ground as a marker, walk back for the shovel, and park the RV close so the trip is short. A demo feedback post says you carry one item and have no backpack, which is why the marker trick exists. A 22 June patch fixed buried boxes that could be opened before they were fully dug out.
Keys are the lock. A 30 October thread says someone found four boxes and one key, and players there say the developer mentioned keys buried underground too. That “developer said” line is a retelling inside the thread. I am marking it as what players claim, not as a quote I can point at in a news post.
What I will not add
No post I trust separates a “rare chest” from an ordinary one with a drop list. No post says you can force a lock. If you have no key, the thread’s advice is to keep sweeping for a key and to use the crowbar on doors, not on the box.

Sweep with the metal detector, mark the spot, and dig with the shovel. Locked boxes need a key.
Does the crowbar open chests?
The crowbar achievement is for doors. Chest achievements name a key.
